Into the lions' den

Two weeks ago, we put out a call for subscribers and it was a rousing success. One response we got was from "Digg", a reddit-like site popular amongst Calgarians San Diegans.

It seems they had read our post and wanted to invite us over for lunch. Being polite and curious, we of course said yes, but still, we knew we would have to prepare.

First, we did some recon:

And like astronauts, we prepared for a worst-case scenario by putting cyanide capsules under our tongues:

It was then time to depart! Peace offering in hand...

...we began our long and arduous journey. The path ran alongside a gladiator arena, underneath a colossus, and past other strange and wonderful sights:

But then, hark!, our destination was in sight!

We tried to sneak in through the back door, but it was sealed with a gordian knot of-- you know what? This "Lord of the Rings" theme is getting stretched pretty thin, so I'm gonna drop it now. It was sealed with an impenetrable 10 digit keypad.

So we came in through the lobby:

Finally, the meeting could begin. You can see the look of tension on everyone's faces:

Much pizza and beer was consumed:

Since we're open-source, we were able to freely discuss our technology and the issues we run into. For example, they're using Cassandra too, and were well familiar with her idiosyncrasies; we exchanged notes and business cards so both sites might improve their infrastructure. At the end of the meeting, we posed for a group picture:

(Yes, one of them is even wearing a reddit shirt!)

And on the way out, they gave us a quick tour of the office:

So I guess the lesson is, there's no reason for redditors to waste comment space picking on Digg. They do their thing, we do ours, Google News and the New York Times do theirs.

P.S.: Thanks to Debbie at Digg for putting the whole thing together!
