Say hello to Mrs. Splashypants

Last month, we got a goldfish for the office. We named her Mrs. Splashy Pants (haven't you heard about her late husband?). The kind folks at ThinkGeek had sent us this amazing goldfish training kit and we needed to see if we too could train a goldfish to play sports with miniature plastic athletic equipment.

We haven't put much effort into training her yet, but we can already tell she isn't a natural. If you'd like to follow her in real-time, tune in to her 24-7 video on Justin.tv. She's a bit of a camgirl. You should see what she does when we put on some Beyoncé.

The StartupSchwag reddit photoshoot

Having trouble imagining yourself in our Freedom From The Press shirt? Tatyana offered to change that by posing for a few pictures with the crew at StartupSchwag. We didn't get a confirmation that she was a redditor, but we also didn't get a denial.

If you've seen enough and want to buy a shirt, use the form below. If you're interested in a few more photos, click here.

At last! Our iPhone app update has been approved

We're sorry it's taken so long, but the new version of our iPhone app, iReddit, is now available. Here's the App Store link.

To the credit of 280 North, developers of the app, they wrote an update within 48 hours of our launch. One annoying bug in particular was affecting a number of you that should now be fixed. But do keep the feedback coming.

Adam Savage answers your questions - Teaser Video

Fellow redditor Adam Savage has been extremely generous with his time, and answered your top 10 questions from the Mythbusters "blueprint" room. We will be putting the full 30min interview up shortly, but here is a quick taste.

Huge thanks to Adam (@donttrythis) and the Discovery crew (@discoverychpr) for sharing their time. Also big thanks to [science] for coming up with some great questions. Adam and Jamie are returning for a seventh season. New Wednesday episodes start on April 8th beginning with a 2 hour demolition special. http://www.discovery.com/mythbusters.

Fact: Adam Savage is a gentleman and a scholar

This is a teaser. All of team reddit made it down to the MythBusters HQ early Thursday morning to ask Adam your questions before they began that day's shoot. Erik is putting together the video and we'll have a preview up any day now. Team reddit would like to thank Adam (@donttrythis) for putting up with us, as well as the folks at DiscoveryPR (@DiscoveryChPR) for making this happen.

In case you're curious about the shirt he's holding, Adam and the MythBusters crew got the newest reddit shirt (the "vintage alien"). It'll be available on the store soon...

At SXSW? Join us for some free beer, free schwag, and a free iPod touch

We'll be at Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill on 303 Red River St. this coming Monday, March 16th from 4-6pm. There will be free beer, free grub, and free schwag. Erik and I will also be there to hand out bobblheads and take your feedback in real-time -- follow @hueypriest and @kn0thing to stay on top of our shenanigans in Austin.

It's technically a Wired event, but our sister company has been gracious enough to include reddit on the guest list.

If you really like PDFs, here's the official invite. Hope to see you there.

UpVote.tv - It's like reddit, but with moving pictures and sound!

It turns out some students at the University of Northern Iowa read reddit. In fact, they read it so much they decided to create a weekly show called UpVote.tv to discuss some of the hottest reddit stories.

It's produced by 4 UNI undergrads for their alternative broadcasting class, which means reading reddit is actually contributing toward their graduation. It's heartening to know not all redditing is counter-productive. They aren't affiliated with us, but we thought it was pretty cool, so here's the latest episode:

They're looking forward to hearing your comments. You can also find the previous episodes here.

Books? Reddit thinks you should read them

If you're not running Adblock, you'll notice a new kind of ad running on reddit. Contrary to what you might think about the 6.5 people running a social news site, we actually enjoy reading text on paper from time to time.* Based on the burgeoning books.reddit community, we thought a few of you would be interested in some recommendations. Think of it like the Colbert bump, only let's call it the "alien bump."

And in the interest of full disclosure, if you happen to buy a book (or film, or videogame) through this advertisement, we get a percentage that pays for more servers. The alien will only be recommending things we think are worth recommending; if you disagree with a recommendation, reddit the ad and let us know.

*OK, a few of us have Kindles, too. There, we admitted it.

reddit still not in the real estate business

There's been a flurry of confusion on reddit today that we'd like to clear up. We routinely tweak our logo and fancied some new bold red letters and a daring blue slash.
Our intention was absolutely not to copy the logo of rēhava.com.

We have no interest in the real estate business and are quite content selling shirts and bobbleheads.

LessWrong: The coolest use of reddit source we've found to date

We open-sourced reddit last June and a number of interesting projects emerged, along with some great site enhancements. But LessWrong has to be the niftiest total re-engineering of reddit code so far.

It's a blogging engine with all the tasty voting and sorting of reddit applied not only to entries, but also to comments. Grab a copy of it on GitHub.

Or, if you'd rather see it in action, spend some time browsing LessWrong and play around with the awesome. And if you've got an open-source project running on reddit code (or just know of one that deserves a shoutout) let us know.

The art of human rationality has never been so badass -- except for that time Ayn Rand roundhouse kicked that Columbia Professor armed with a copy of The Communist Manifesto.

TheCuteList renaming contest ends, a dog and cat are renamed and hopefully a little closer to finding a home

Brooklyn had a pair of orphaned pets that needed a new name and TheCuteList was there to help (also known as aww.reddit.com). Our aim was to draw some attention to these animals (and the many others like them in shelters across the U.S.) and hopefully give them some fine new names that will help them find new homes. The submitters of the highest scoring comments as of noon today will receive a bobblehead for their creativity.

The cat formerly known as Kitty will now be Talullah, suggested by hgielrehtaeh.

The dog formerly known as London will now be Karma, suggested by noroom.

Pictures to come.

IdealistNews.com: a reddit for all things nonprofit

Today is an exciting day. We're announcing a partnership with one of the nonprofit world's best-known websites: Idealist.org

We'd all noticed the dearth of social news sites with a focus on nonprofit news -- which is particularly surprising given how many organizations like Kiva and DonorsChoose have so masterfully used the Internet to reinvent how nonprofits can work. The more people interested in this sector who become aware of the [free] technology at their disposal, the better.

Enter IdealistNews.com, a resource for all things nonprofit. We repainted things to keep Idealist's look and feel, but for my fellow hardcore redditors, you can still subscribe to it as nonprofit.reddit.

Last month we saw nearly 5 million unique visitors to reddit, many of whom participated in our recent FEEDaNEED project, volunteering their talents to nonprofits that needed them. We've already seen what good can come from our community (not to mention actually saving the world) and with so many businesses like AIG showing us just how hip "nonprofit" is, there's a lot of promise for this new reddit.

CONFIRMED! Adam Savage of Mythbusters will answer your questions, redditors

Do we seem a little giddy? Well, that's because reddit will get the chance to interview Adam Savage of Mythbusters.

We're taking your questions here. We'll ask Adam the top 10 questions as of noon pacific on March 11th.

In the meantime, you should follow him on Twitter @donttrythis and while you're at it, here's your direct line to the alien.

And if you don't know who Adam Savage is, we feel sorry for you. Watch this video (one of his favorite bits) and it should clear things up.

Unfortunately, Jamie will not be answering any questions. Instead, we have this substitute to offer you. You may vote up questions to ask it, but we will not make any attempt to get them answered.

Bonus! Adam's a long-time redditor and even calls reddit his #5 most visited site daily.

Never mind the fact that our friends at Fark are #1.

Curses! Fark is always one step ahead of us (or in this case, four). But thanks to our plucky community manager, Erik, and the PR folks @Discovery, reddit gets some Q&A time with Adam.

Happy square root day

Math.reddit knew today was a day to celebrate. 3-3-09 is one of those special days when the month and day represent the (two-digit form) square root of the year. We're going to have to wait until April 4th, 2016 for the next one, so get out your TI-83s and uncork the champagne.

Vote up if baby - reddit now has onesies for sale

Our xkcd store is expanding. And if your family (or the family of a fellow redditor) is doing the same, consider our new onesie. It offers the same comfort and style of our other shirts, but in a size suitable for babies.

You can vote up the little person using your finger -- their karma point is registered on the back. This onesie currently doesn't support save or share functionality.

The current version is machine-washable (something reddit.com will never be) and for sale here. The world could use a few more redditors. You come into the world naked, but not for long if you're prepared.

Support reddit, breed, and buy your brood onesies -- in whatever order you like.
